Article - Are Babies Sinners? (Part 1)
The Bible is clear that babies are not sinners for the following reasons: 1) Sin is a personal choice (Isaiah 53:6 states, “All we like sheep have gone astray”- NOT “All were born astray”; James 1:14-15 states, “But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his OWN desires…when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death” - NOT “When conceived/born, babies inherit the sin of Adam”); 2) Everyone is responsible/accountable for his own personal sins (Ezekiel 18:20 states that children do not bear the iniquity/guilt of their parents; Romans 14:12 states that each one will give account of HIMSELF to God); 3) Children are pure, innocent and without sin (Isaiah 7:14-16; Matthew 18:2-4; 19:13-15; Mark 9:36; 10:13-16; Luke 18:15-17; Romans 9:10-12; 1 Corinthians 14:20); 4) Salvation is through no other means than Jesus (Acts 4:10-12). Jesus is the author of eternal salvation only to those who obey Him (Hebrew 5:9). In order to be saved from any and all sin, one must hear the gospel with his own ears (Romans 1:16; 10:17), believe with his own heart that Jesus is the Son of God (John 3:16), repent of his own personal sins (Acts 3:19; 17:30), confess with his own mouth that Jesus is Lord (Romans 10:9-10) and be buried/baptized into Jesus for the remission of his own personal sins with the understanding that his sins are being forgiven (Acts 2:38; 22:16; Romans 6:3-4; Colossians 2:11-12). Babies cannot comprehend God nor can they obey the gospel in order to be saved. Hence, if original sin or total hereditary depravity was a true doctrine of the Bible, then all babies/small children who died would be “punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord” (John 8:21; 2 Thessalonians 1:8-9). If not, why not?
