Why Did The Lord Send A Lying Spirit?
Some verses in the Scripture are statements expressed as commands that are often represented as what is permitted to happen. God is sovereign and in control. The Scriptures seem to depict Him as directly doing something when, in fact, He is permitting it to occur. For example, the demons wanted to enter the herd of swine and Jesus permitted them (Matthew 8:31). He commanded them to go.
In 1 Kings 22, Ahab has turned away from God since he has married Jezebel and allowed the religion of Baal to run rampant across the country. In 1 Kings 22:20-22, it is clearly obvious that Ahab was not going to listen to true prophets, such as Micaiah, but rather to the false prophets in whom he placed his faith. This vision is about God permitting Ahab to listen to the false prophets. It is interesting that God revealed through Micaiah, the true prophet, the truth that Ahab was deceiving himself. We see an example of this today where people would rather believe a lie than listen to the truth (2 Thessalonians 2:10-12).
