Of What Is A Human Being Composed And What Are They?
(1 Thessalonians 5:23)
The Bible describes a human being as a tripartite (3-part) being composed of body, soul, and spirit.
1 Thessalonians 5:23 states: “Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
The body is the physical component of a human being in which the spirit is housed. When the spirit departs from the body, then that person is classified as dead (James 2:26).
In the Bible the words "soul" and "spirit" are sometimes used interchangeably for the same entity, that is, the spiritual component of man that will never die (Matthew 10:28). Sometimes these same two words are used interchangeably to define the "life principle".
The soul is defined in 1 Thessalonians 5:23 as the “life principle”. The spirit is defined in 1 Thessalonians 5:23 as the spirit that God gives to a man (Ecclesiastes 12:7) which will continue to exist even after physical death (Psalm 16:8-11).
