God Never Changes! - Ben Bailey

“Of old you laid the foundation of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands.

They will perish, but you will remain; they will all wear out like a garment. You will change them like a robe, and they will pass away, but you are the same, and your years have no end” (Ps. 102: 25-27).

“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever” (Hebrews 13:8).

The world we live in is filled with constant change and never-ending updates.  The moment you buy a new computer or phone there is a better one out.  The first time you turn on your new computer there are multiple new updates that must be installed.   At an annoying rate, things are constantly changing in our fast-paced world.   Amid all this change, there is some really good news—God Never Changes.  The unchanging God is our Rock we can always trust in to be exactly the same—no updates, no newer models or additions…just the same all the time.  To a Christian, this should be really encouraging news!

The Psalmist reminds us of the eternal and unchanging nature of God when he contrasts the creation with the Creator. The Psalmist uses a vivid illustration to help us understand this point.  Doesn’t everyone like having a new outfit to wear every now and then?  How long does that new outfit stay “new”?  Not very long.  You can buy a  new pair of jeans, wear them and wash them a few times and before you know it they are faded with holes in them!  Clothes just don’t stay new looking very long.  God is not that way. The Psalmist says, “…you are the same and your years have no end” (Ps. 102:27).  When I think about this idea it fortifies my faith and trust in Almighty God!

Along with the fact that God never changes is the wonderful idea that our Savior does not change either.  Remember, Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever (Heb. 13:8).  One of the things that teach us is that God’s plan in Christ Jesus is not going to be amended or abrogated.  From the moment I first trust in Jesus to the moment I draw my last breath, He will be my Savior who I can always lean upon.  He will never leave you nor forsake you so that you may boldly say, “The Lord is my helper, I will not fear, what can man do to me?” (Heb. 13:5-7).  The Christian can find great confidence in the solid nature of Jesus Christ!

As each of us moves through different phases of our lives and as we look at how the world has changed so drastically in just the last couple of years, we can each find solace in the fact that God never changes.  The same God people prayed to and put their confidence in for salvation in the 1st century, is the same God we put our hope and faith in today.  May God help us to continue to be faithful to him until death so that we can have the crown of life (Rev. 2:10)!
